Last Sunday after Epiphany – Year A

Readings: Exodus 24:12-18; Psalm 99; Philippians 3:7-14; Matthew 17:1-9

In faith, let us pray to the Lord, saying….

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We are your people, O God, called by your name, and in this assembly we proclaim your greatness.  You are the Holy One, the King over all the earth, and we trust in your sovereign authority as we offer to you the thoughts and petitions of our hearts.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We pray for the world, for the many people who have never heard of your salvation, for those who scoff or think lightly of the precious name of Jesus, and for those who have not received your love and deliverance. Have mercy on the world, O Lord, and fulfill your promise to claim the ends of the earth as your inheritance.

I invite your prayers for specific countries in need of the Gospel.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We pray for your church, O Lord, asking you to purify us and grant us grace to single-mindedly and whole-heartedly pursue our Lord Jesus Christ.  Help us to see our lives rightly, to know with clarity the unparalleled worth of Jesus and, by his light, to see everything else.  Reveal to us whatever might distract or hinder us from gaining Christ that we might share in the fullness of his suffering, death, and resurrection.

I invite your prayers for the church throughout the world.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We are often afraid, Lord, beset by fears and doubts, by the uncertainty of our lives, and by the many things beyond our control.  Grant us the courage to believe you and to trust in your word.  Help us to listen to Jesus and to follow him in every area of our lives.  Come to us, Lord, fearful and weak though we may be, and lift up our heads, enabling us to cast aside fear and to see Jesus only.

I invite your prayers for your own lives.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We proclaim the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord.  We ask that the whole world would know him, would somehow be found in him.  Give us courage to proclaim with our mouths and lives the lordship of Jesus.  We ask that others will hear and see our testimony and, beholding Jesus, follow hard after him.

I invite your prayers for people who are not yet followers of Jesus.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We remember those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit. Help them to wait patiently upon you, O Lord, the one who hears his people’s cries. We pray for the poor, the oppressed, the hungry, and the sick; the broken and despairing; the lonely and those afflicted by doubt and fear. We think of orphans and widows, prisoners and slaves, those struggling with addiction and pain. The burden of the world is too great for us, and the groaning of suffering too much for us to bear! Have mercy on all that you have made, O Lord! In your infinite compassion and wisdom, proclaim your rule of righteousness to the ends of the earth. Lift up those who are bowed down, set their feet on sure ground, that many would see and put their trust in you. For you alone are the hope of the afflicted, you alone are the one who restores all things.

I invite your prayers for those who suffer.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We thank you for your church—for all who have been given your grace in Christ Jesus. How beautiful is the bride of Christ, stretching back throughout the ages and across the world, crossing boundaries of time and place! We remember now those who have gone before us, those who have died in the faith, trusting that they are in your care.

I invite your thanksgivings to God for those who have died in the faith.

Silence

Jesus, light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We are overcome with holy fear, O Lord, when we consider how you have revealed yourself.  We worship you, mighty King over all the earth, the Holy One.  We are awed by your majesty and humbled by the way in which you have stooped down to speak to your people.  Help us to go forth with courage, renewed once more by the glorious vision of Christ Jesus our Lord, through whom we pray, Amen.

In faith, let us pray to the Lord, saying….

Jesus light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

Almighty God, Creator and Sustainer of all life, how wonderful are your thoughts toward us!  You are intimately acquainted with the depths of our being, with every aspect of our bodies and souls.  You know us like no one else and we humbly come before you today with all that is on our hearts.

Silence

Silence

Jesus light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We thank you that Christ is not divided, that we are part of one body, preserved in the unity of your spirit.  We pray for parts of the body divided by quarrels and misunderstandings, for parts where people are led astray by false teaching or human error, for parts that are attacked from within and without. Protect us by your holy name, that we may be unified under Jesus Christ, the head of the church.  You have promised to build your church, and we trust in your unfailing power to present us all spotless at the last day.

I invite your prayers for the church throughout the world.

Silence

Jesus light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We are a people who once dwelt in darkness, in the region and shadow of death.  We have seen the glorious brightness of the light of the world, Jesus Christ.  Awaken afresh in our hearts the realization of his dawning. Help us to courageously proclaim with our mouths and lives the lordship of Jesus.  We ask that others will hear and see our testimony and, beholding Jesus, follow hard after him.

I invite your prayers for people who are not yet followers of Jesus.

Silence

Jesus light of the world

May the whole earth know your brightness.

We desire to be wholehearted followers of Jesus. May we, like the disciples, cast aside whatever might hinder us and immediately follow our Lord.   Examine our thoughts and hearts, O Lord, and reveal to us any area that yet needs to be surrendered.

Lord, you have searched us out and know us.  You are aware of our most secret places and nothing is hidden from your sight.  You hem us in behind and before with the light of your presence.  Help us to be aware of your nearness this week, and grant us grace to know, in the midst of every situation, that your nearness is our good.  Transform us, O Lord, to be a people who clearly and brightly reflect the light of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we humbly pray, Amen.
