Prayers for the 3rd Sunday in Advent – Year C (BCP)

We will rejoice and exult with all our hearts,
For the King of Israel, the Lord, is in our midst;
You have taken away the judgments against us,
And delivered us from the fear of evil.
You have changed our shame into praise;
And your name is glorious in all the earth.

What can we do to make ready our hearts for you?
Show us how to prepare your way, O Lord.
We come to you in repentance and humility,
And we desire to give you level paths to our hearts.
Hear now the prayers and thanksgivings we offer in your name.

Silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We pray for the worldwide church.
May we be marked with a love for whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy.
Quicken our wills with prayer and thanksgiving,
And guard us with your all-surpassing peace.
Grant Advent Anglican your grace to joyfully practice what we have learned and received and heard from your word as we wait for and hasten your coming.

We commit the work of the Church to you, especially…

Silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Sovereign Lord, you are the help and hope of all nations.
You care for the people of all lands:
The hungry and oppressed,
Those who live in peace and prosperity,
And those bowed down with troubles,
The righteous and the wicked – all souls are yours.

We think of all the areas in the world that are torn by war, disease and hunger,
Communities that are overridden by corruption and injustice,
Places where the poor and oppressed cry out,
Places where the rich and well-fed are weighed down and heavy-hearted.
We humbly tell you of the needs we see in the world around us,
And ask that your kingdom would come to all people.

Silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We pray for the needs of our community here in Seattle.
Grow in us a greater love for our neighbors, our classmates and coworkers, our families, friends, and enemies.
Help us to be quick to pray and thank you in all situations,
That we might not be anxious for anything.
Grant us the joy of your nearness,
And guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus with your peace.
Give us a love for your creation and the wisdom to steward your earth responsibly.
Help us to live this week expecting you, Lord Jesus, to come into every area of our lives, especially…

Silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

O Lord, as we consider the suffering and trouble of those near to us,
Grant us the mind of Christ to look on pain and yet trust in your character.

We believe that you come to your people, even in the midst of suffering.
We remember those who suffer in body, mind, and spirit.
Come to them now, merciful Lord, and sustain them in your presence.
We commit to your care all those in pain, especially…

Silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We trust your Word, that Jesus is the firstborn among many brethren,
That those who have died in Christ will also live with him.

Help us to believe this promise of eternal life and, so believing, to eagerly await your return.
We entrust to your continual care our brothers and sisters who have died in the faith, especially…

Silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

You are our God.
We will declare it without fear:
Behold, the Lord God who is mighty to save!
Behold, the Lord God who rejoices over us with gladness!
Behold, the Lord God who quiets us with his love!
Behold, the Lord God who exults over us with loud singing!
This is our God,
The glorious one,
The one who is in the midst of his people,
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

Silence

We wait for you alone through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

In faith, let us pray to the Lord, saying….

Hear us Risen Lord,
Our resurrection and our life.

O Lord, our hearts overflow with sounds of exultation and victory.
We will say it again and again, “Jesus has triumphed!  Jesus is exalted!”
Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in might;
Your right hand, O Lord, has overthrown the enemy.
Who is like you, O Lord, glorious in holiness, awesome in renown, and worker of wonders?
This is your doing, O God who is our strength and salvation, yours alone,
And it is marvelous in our eyes.
On this day, you have acted;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

I invite your praises and thanksgivings.

Silence

Hear us Risen Christ,
Our resurrection and our life.

Your word, O Lord, is right,
And all your works are sure.
Your loving-kindness fills the whole earth,
And your word sustains every living thing.
We have heard the record of your saving deeds in history,
How you saved your people in ages past.
Bring us now into the fullness of redemption,
For surely it is God alone who saves us.
We will trust in you and not be afraid,
Saying again and again to the entire world, “Jesus has triumphed!  Jesus is exalted!”
May your deeds be known to the ends of the earth.
And may your name be exalted among all peoples,
For you are worthy of unending praise.

I invite you to pray for the work of the worldwide church, remembering especially people who have not yet heard the good news about Jesus.

Silence

I invite you to pray for the global Anglican Communion, remembering especially our lay ministers, priests, deacons, and bishops.

Silence

Hear us Risen Lord,
Our resurrection and our life.

O Lord, you know the world in which we live.
You dwelt among us and lived the suffering of the human condition.
You took upon yourself the weight of injustice and evil.
You see the entire world in this moment and no instance of pain escapes your attention.

We consider your cross, Jesus, and how hopeless it once appeared,
And we rejoice in your transforming power that brought about victory and new life from such a moment of darkness and despair.
We will say it again and again, “Jesus has triumphed!  Jesus is exalted!”
We trust in your everlasting triumph and look to you with hope.
Teach us to live in a world so torn asunder.
May your kingdom come in the midst of our suffering and pain.

I invite your prayers for those who suffer throughout the world and for those ministering to them in Christ’s name.

Silence

I invite your prayers for the leaders of the world, remembering especially Barack Obama our president.

Silence

Hear us Risen Lord,
Our resurrection and our life.

You are the Lord,
Our good above all other.
You are our portion and our cup.
In you our souls delight,
And you have given us a goodly heritage.
We believe that your ways are good.
Incline our ears to your teaching,
And enable us to look to you in hope,
Whatever our circumstances,
Joyfully calling to mind again and again, “Jesus has triumphed!  Jesus is exalted!”
We offer our lives to you, Lord of all, desiring to surrender every corner of our person to your lordship:

I invite you to cast all your worries and concerns on the Lord.
Silence

I invite you to commit the work of your hands to the Lord.
Silence

I invite you to ask for discernment in all your decisions this week.
Silence

I invite you to consider how you might love well those the Lord brings into your life this week.
Silence

I invite you to offer up any other prayers and intercessions.
Silence

Hear us Risen Christ,
Our resurrection and our life.

We think of the women at your tomb, Lord Christ, those who first saw you after your glorious resurrection.
We imagine the other disciples as they heard of your victory and saw you with their own eyes.
We remember the millions of our brothers and sisters throughout the ages who together have believed and proclaimed your victory.
We join our voices with theirs to say it again and again, “Jesus has triumphed!  Jesus is exalted!”
How good it is to be part of your church, stretching back to those first believers and spreading throughout the corners of the world.
Thank you Lord for those who have gone before us, those who have died in the faith.
Our hearts are encouraged by their faithful examples and we pray for them now, trusting that they are in your care.

I invite your thanksgivings to God for those who have died in the faith.

Silence

Hear us Risen Lord,
Our resurrection and our life.

We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

Silence

Leader & People:
Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
In your compassion forgive us our sins,
Known and unknown,
Things done and left undone;
And so uphold us by your Spirit
That we may live and serve you in newness of life,
To the honor and glory of your Name;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
